Carlton Slum Clearance, C.1958

This is how the government viewed slum clearance in the 1950s. This illustration, from The Herald newspaper of 6 March 1958, shows that they envisaged the whole area from the Exhibition Building to Elgin Street, and from Nicholson Street to Rathdowne Street being demolished and replaced by a very large, modern housing estate. If this had happened, we would have lost Murchison Square, Macarthur Square and all the lovely old historic house around them. It didn't happen!
