Fletcher Jones opened his first retail store in the former Western Market buildings, at the corner of Market and Collins Streets, on 24 June 1946. 

Queues on opening day lined Collins Street to King Street of men eagerly awaiting to buy trousers. 

Selling nothing but trousers, and in 72 different sizes, the store was an immediate success.
