Southbank Walk would be where we're standing, State Theatre on the right, and Flinders Street Railway Station on the extreme left. In this view, you can just see the recently completed Treasury Building on the Spring Street hill, distantly on the left. The 'falls' then on the Yarra, just downstream at William Street, meant that boats couldn't get this far upstream, and this section of the river was a bit of a pondage, with river weed. It also had a conspicuous odour, owing to wool washing upstream. The William Street rocky 'falls' were removed by dynamiting in 1883
