Bourke Street, C.1948

Three Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board (MMTB) buses, including a Double-Decker behind.

The citys last Cable Trams operated on this route, which ran to Northcote and East Brunswick, until the last tram ran on October 26 1940, the tracks and cable slot remained in the roadway, and stayed there until Electric Trams were introduced between 1955 and 1956.

▪️MMTB buses operated the route for the 16 years between the end of Cable Trams and the launch of Electric Trams. The Double Decker buses were introduced in an attempt to cater for passenger demand but proved to be both unpopular and largely ineffective. At peak times it was almost impossible to collect fares and passengers often missed their stop trying to exit crowded buses. Also, the top decks frequently collided with shop verandas and electric light poles.
