Unrealised proposal for intersection of Flinders Street & Swanston Street C.1895 -"St Paul's Circus".

Inspired by London's Picadilly Circus, the idea was to create grand frontages to both the railway stations (Princes Bridge & Flinders St), and hew off the edge of all four corners at the intersection creating a grand southern gateway to the city (which it was argued Princes Bridge itself failed to provide) around a curcular roadway, and allow for the better circulation of traffic and pedestrians. 

The plan would have requiered the cathedral to give up land, and demolished Young & Jacksons. 

The construction of Flinders St Station (which was about to commence at the time of publication) rendered the project the pure pipedream that it  probably always was.
