Spencer Street station was opened in 1859, 5 years after the Melbourne Termus (Flinders Street) but it wasn’t until the late 1880s and the building of the Flinders Street Viaduct, that the two stations were formally connected. (A single ground level track, had been laid between the two stations in 1879 but it was only used at night - and only by freight trains)
By the time of this shot the station had undergone a number of upgrades, including a major early 1960s rebuild. The transformation to Southern Cross began a few years after this shot, in October 2002 and the name change became official in 2005.
