Queen Street 'Melbourne and Hobsons Bay Railway Line, C.1860

Queen Street 'Melbourne and Hobsons Bay Railway Line, C.1860

This quite amazing photo from 162 years ago shows the southern end of Queen Street at Flinders Street.

On the right is the Oriental Bank on the south west corner of Queen and Flinders Lane. This was built in 1859, when Melbourne was just 24 years old.

Ahead is the Melbourne and Hobsons Bay Railway Company line to Sandridge (Port Melbourne) which crosses the Yarra - over the  original wooden Sandridge Bridge, at what was then, the Yarra Falls.

Beyond that the largely undeveloped river flats of Emerald Hill or as we know it today, South Melbourne.
