Most composers started as apprentices. Compositors earned more than other craftsmen. In the 1850s a good compositor could earn 18 pound a week, a mason or bricklayer earned only 6 pound. Few women entered the field. The 1893 census recorded only 14 women compared to 1514 male compositors.
