Cables could be many miles in length and joining them involved splicing the metal strands together over an eighty foot length. It was the job of an employee to sit and watch the cables as they ran to detect any fraying or other problems with the system.
The Brunswick Street/Victoria Parade engine room was demolished soon after this photo was taken.
