The 1880 Melbourne International Exhibition was such a success that the merchants and politicians of Melbourne were determined to do it all over again.
So formed the enormous 1888 - 1889 Centennial Exhibition. New temporary annexes stretched from Carlton Street to the north. The exhibition halls covered almost 14 hectares of continuous roofed space. At this time, Melbourne had the largest building in the world under one roof.
Nearly 40 countries sent exhibitions, entering them in 92 separate categories and nearly 2 million people come through the doors.
