Princes Gate Plaza, Flinders and Swanston Streets, Intersection, C.1967
An integral part of the Princes Gate development, was its plaza. Relatively simple in its design, it was raised above the level of the adjacent intersection of Flinders and Swanston Streets, and accessed by the public from street-level by stairs (Flinders Street) and a ramp (accessed from Swanston Street). Raising the plaza above ground level was intended to muffle the noise from the busy intersection below. The plaza also roofed one of the entrances to Princes Bridge Station and shops. Princes Gate was opened in 1967, and within thirty years was demolished to build Federation Square.
