General Store and Newsagent, Forest Road The Basin, C.1939
Malcolm Davey and his wife ran the original store - Malcolm was a builder and build two houses adjacent to the store ,one to live in and the second one for their son Don Davey and his family.
Those houses are still standing and looking good. The store was sold to John and Ruby Weidner nee Haberecht. The bought it in 1939 and managed it for the duration of the 2nd World War. The store had the newsagency licence and it was the lone place to obtain all the commodities needed, and many of the unemployed of the area brought their susso cheques fortnightly and paid their bills, receiving change from the susso.
