Williamstown Ferry, Port Melbourne, C.1962 - 1963
A ferry service operated on the Yarra River between the City and Newport/Williamstown from the mid 19th century.
A steam powered, chain driven unit was introduced in the early 1930s, running between Williamstown Road Port Melbourne and Newport until the mid 1970s, when it ceased with the opening of the Westgate Bridge.
This shot shows the ferry pulling in to Port Melbourne, with the Drive Chains, which sat on the river bed to avoid snagging shipping, clearly visible. The Newport Power Station is beyond on the far bank.
