North Fitzroy Railway Station, and Inner Circle Line, C.1943

North Fitzroy was on the old Inner Circle Railway line, which served Melbourne’s near northern and north eastern suburbs.

The station sat on Park Street, just west of Rae Street. This photo looks east over Rae Street, past the North Fitzroy A signal box to the Brunswick Street North crossing beyond. The North Fitzroy Electrical sub station (built in 1915 to power the line) is on the left

Opening in 1888, the Inner Circle line served Melbourne’s near northern and north eastern suburbs and provided a link to the Epping and Hurstbridge lines. Note: The direct link between Clifton Hill and the city (via, Collingwood, Richmond and Jolimont) did not open until 1901.

The line (which was barely an arc, let alone a circle) branched from the Upfield line just beyond Royal Park, then passed through North Carlton and North Fitzroy.

Beyond North Fitzroy (just over St. Georges Road) the line turned south to Fitzroy Station, while a branch continued on to Rushall and Clifton Hill. The Epping junction was just before Rushall. Hurstridge trains first ran on to Victoria Park (then called Collingwood) before returning to Clifton Hill and the Hurstbridge line.
