Flour Mill, Fights Falls, the Yarra River, Abbotsford, C.1863
Dights Falls is a scenic rocky falls weir on the Yarra River at Abbotsford, about 4 kms north east of Melbourne, just downstream from the junction with Merri Creek.
Prior to white settlement, the area was occupied by the Wurundjeri tribe: the rock falls giving them a natural river crossing and the weir providing a good spot to catch fish.
In the early 1840s John Dight, a miller from Campbelltown in NSW, established Melbourne's first water-powered flour mill on the site, as seen here about 20 years later. In 1864, Thomas Kenny leased the Mill from Dight, operating it until the 1870s.
The Dight family sold the mill site to Edwin Trennery in 1878 and he subsequently subdivided the land.
