Flinders Street Railway Station, C.1910
As much a symbol of the city as the Harbour Bridge and Opera House is to Sydney, Flinders Street Railway Station has become an icon of Melbourne.
The station's main building was completed in 1909 and features distinctive and eclectic Edwardian influences including a classical dome, arched entrance and clock tower. In many ways, it is not unlike the grandest of railway stations being built all around the British Empire at the time. The clean lines and fresh look of the building in this image would suggest that the image comes from immediately after the structure was completed. Note the cable trams in both Flinders Street and Swanston Street.
