Fitzroy Goods Line, Fitzroy, C.1980

Fitzroy Goods Line, Fitzroy, C.1980

The old branch-line into the Fitzroy goods yard, just after it left the Inner Circle line at North Fitzroy, in Melbourne’s near north. It closed the following year.

Note the sign at left… ”All trains must stop here - and at all level crossings on this line - until signalled forward by Hand Signalman”.

The Inner Circle opened in 1888 with two stations: North Carlton, and North Fitzroy on the main line, with this short branch, which cut through what is now the Edinburgh Gardens, to the old Fitzroy station and goods yard behind the Brunswick Street oval.

From 1948, the line was used exclusively for freight and closed completely in 1981.
