Carlton Gardens, before the garden, C.1880

Looking SE from the Royal Exhibition Buildings in 1880 over the ornamental lake towards the intersection of Nicholson & Victoria Sts, with a spire-less St Patricks Cathedral at rear - those weren't added till the late 1930s.

This was famed local horticulturist William Sangster's reworking for the 1880 exhibition of the gardens' earlier 1850s planting scheme, which we largely know today.
