Television arrived in Australia just in time for the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, with Melbourne and Sydney getting the first channels.
Despite television sets being manufactured in Australia, they were very expensive. Usually the first family in the street to purchase a TV set would find themselves playing host to neighbouring families who were keen to experience the new medium. There was an amazing feeling in the community at the time that we were all witnessing something new and very exciting, neighbours became friends and shared their homes and hospitality.
