MELBOURNE… 1862
Painting by Henry Burn (1807/1888) looks north to the 27 year old city of Melbourne over the 2nd (of 3) Princes Bridges. This bridge was replaced by the current one in 1886.
The small square building on the right, behind the grazing cattle, is Melbourne’s original Morgue - and Births, Deaths and Marriages Registry. This site later became Princes Bridge Railway Station and is now Federation Square.
The Church beyond is the 1852 version of St Pauls Cathedral, on an east west alignment. This was replaced by the current Cathedral in 1891: Spireless until 1932.
On the north western corner, beyond the Melbourne Terminus (the original Flinders Street Station) is the 1853 built Princes Bridge Hotel (better known as Young and Jacksons). This building today forms the central part of the hotel, which was extended in later years.
